A Playlist to Sharpen My Memory?

Ok so Your Playlist Can Change Your Life says that you can use music to sharpen your memory, oh boy! Anyway, one of the ways you can do this is by making a playlist that has music that you have strong memories connected with, so the other night I sat down and created this playlist:

1. “Maggie May” – Rod Stewart – this song was playing in the background at my wife’s house as we stood in her hallway one night, either on the first night I asked her out or took her out, anyway it was early in our relationship! read more

Delanco 5K – A Good Run and some music from Quicksilver Messenger Service!

At the finish, note the mass of runners behind me!

So we got up and out of bed in the dark this morning to trek that long way across the Riverside – Delanco Bridge and take part in the Delanco Woman’s Civic Association 5K took us all of five minutes to get there!  It was a nice morning and as I warmed up to Halestorm’s The Strange Case of…... I felt not great but ok!

The race started at the appointed 9:00. The course starts on Rancocas Ave along the Rancocas Creek and winds it’s way down to the Delaware River. along the river and then it follows Delanco streets makes a loop off of Fenimore Lane (where I stared at the home my wife grew up in) and then returns along the same route to the finish. The course is flat for most of the run. The only grade change comes within the first and last half-mile, between Rancocas Avenue and Cedar Street where the grade goes from elevation 8 to about 19. read more

New Read – Your Playlist Can Change Your Life!

So the other night I took an armful of books back to the library, several untouched and overdue, and I was good, only bringing one back in return! The title of the one was Your Playlist Can Change Your Life: 10 Proven Ways Your Favorite Music Can Revolutionize Your Health, Memory, Organization, Alertness and More. How can I go wrong with a title like that?  So I jumped right in and I’m on Chapter 3. So far I’ve gotten some good ideas. I really don’t use playlists that much, but I did make one yesterday that included many of my favorite songs, it was designed to be listened to after lunch as a pick me up! I used it yesterday and it seemed to work! This morning I started to play it again, then I switched to a mix of John Prine, that lasted a while and put me in a pretty good mood. I was doing some permeability testing and when I calculated the rates of a sample that I had tested with and without a standpipe, the rates that should have been the same, but they were different! SO I went back and check all the radius of the tubes and the numbers that I had were all different than what was on the excel spreadsheet, I was panicking, I wondered have I been calculating things wrong for a while, then I switched my music mix to music that calms me down the vibes of Gary Burton. I listened for a few minutes and then looked back over the chart, I double checked what I was doing with the example in the regulations and there I found the reason for the differences between the numbers, that I was trying to use and those on the  table. The table was in inches and I was trying to use centimeters! Problem solved and I was now really calmed down! Hum, I think that Burton helped! Maybe there is something to this playlist thing, the only thing I know is that I’m going to keep reading and doing the exercises and who knows what the results may be!!!! read more

A Good Read to Help My Happiness Project – Throw Out Fifty Things!

Ok so I’ve done really poorly at posting here and keepingg my happiness project up to date. As you know, I started my happiness project at the beginning of this month, and started where Gretchen started, with Energy and Vitality. As part of the project, I’ve create a series of resolutions to work on each month, and am attempting to keep track of whether or not I have kept those resolutions on a daily basis, by making either an X for no, or a check for yes on a chart. While I am not doing well at keeping the chart, I have been working on the resolutions a little every day! read more

Mom’s Memorial Service – October 6, 2012

So yesterday we ran around getting everything set up for my mom’ memorial service which was held today. With her many lists my wife did a wonderful job of coordinating everything, and making sure the day was perfect. She succeeded.  The service today was very nice.  The minister Craig Waetke give a beautiful eulogy and several members of the audience gave some nice personal remembrances. read more

My Twelve Commandments (Draft) – and Oct 4 Scorecard!

Ok so yesterday, I made my first attempt at My Twelve Commandments i.e the overarching values that drive my life or should drivemy life! Here’s the first draft

1. Do unto other, as you would have them do unto you!

Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you. [is] (…) the single greatest, simplest, and most important moral axiom humanity has ever invented, one which reappears in the writings of almost every culture and religion throughout history, the one we know as the Golden Rule read more

The Happiness Score Card: October 2, 2012!

So let’s see how I did yesterday on my October happiness resolutions concerning boosting energy-Vitality-

Go to sleep earlier – well we know I didn’t go to sleep earlier so this one gets an X!

eat energy foods – by the time I wrote these resolutions my eating was pretty much over for the day! I guess I get an X again!

Toss, store and reorganize – ah, my first check mark – to help me toss I started to read, Throw Out Fifty Things: Clear the Clutter Find Your Life by Gail Blanke, which I had bought a while ago! Remember that procrastination the thing that brings me down, well have, I put off reading this book until now!  I am through the first section of the book which deals with clearing clutter in the house. The author takes each room in the house breaks down what can be tossed and methods about how to decide! The good thing is that her ideas are really good, the bad thing is that multiple things from the same group only count as one item!! But I did start yesterday and did some tossing in the bathroom and threw out read more
